My study city at university this year (and next year) is Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. As a class we took a week-long field-trip to the city, and I was astonished by the warmth of the sunlight even at the end of January. The quality of the light beautiful too – it was still very low, but because it was so much closer to the equator than Edinburgh the sun was very bright and strong, creating rich shadows and deep tones on ever surface it touched. Where Lisbon really came alive for me was the interplay between water and land, and I spent much of trip both photographing and videoing the relationship between the sea and the city.
